ASSOCIATION FACT SHEET

The Association An independent, not-for-profit professional association, the Texas Association of School Business Officials (TASBO) is dedicated to serving as the recognized source of accurate, objective school business and operations information, educating its diverse membership and constituency in professional best practices, and promoting high standards of conduct and professional ethics in the industry.

TASBO is one of the state and province affiliates of the Association of School Business Officials International (ASBO) which serves members from the United States, Canada, and more than 20 other nations.

Established in 1946, TASBO began as a forum for exchanging ideas and sharing information about school business operations in Texas. In the early years, TASBO was operated by volunteers throughout the state, but as the Association’s membership and services grew, a center of operations was founded in Austin in 1986.

Organizational Structure The Association operates under the leadership of an executive director and the guidance of a 13-member Board of Directors including four officers; all are veteran school business and operations administrators. There are 17 full-time staff employed at the Austin headquarters. TASBO is organized on a volunteer committee principle with 14 research committees and two standing committees serving as the basic, fundamental force within the Association. Committee members continually investigate and plan toward better school financial management and operations and the effective use of educational resources.

Services In addition to exceptional learning and networking opportunities, TASBO offers a variety of services and essential resources to its membership including research, management reviews, state funding consultation, information technology resources, legislative and regulatory information, best practices, eFACTS+ and more. The Association also offers a voluntary program of certification and continuing education to recognize standards of professional competence. Certifications offered by TASBO include the Registered Texas School Business Administrator (RTSBA), Certified Texas School Business Official (CTSBO), and Certified Texas School Business Specialist (CTSBS) designations. TASBO and Texas A&M University (TAMU) at Commerce also offer the Master of Science in Management Degree program with a specialization for School Business Management.

Membership TASBO has approximately 5,550 members and 30 regional affiliates, representing more than 900 school districts in Texas.

Budget The Association’s annual operating budget for 2009-2010 is about $4 million.
